Port Canaveral CT5 Dock Ext
CT5 pier-extension strengthening coordinated CFRP coverage and anchorage with deck moment demands and the revised gangway wheel path.
Delta Structural Technology completed CFRP work for the Cruise Terminal 5 pier extension at Port Canaveral. The engineering coordination focused on the moment demands in selected deck units and the extent of composite reinforcement needed along their spans. Delta worked with Fyfe, CH2M and Vortex to bring the reinforcing layout, calculations and construction submittals into alignment.

Project challenge
The design required careful interpretation of loads expressed per foot of deck width. The gangway wheel path had also shifted from its earlier position, affecting which units were to receive reinforcement. These details influenced the amount and location of FRP. The team needed a clear, shared load basis before material coverage and final shop drawings could be established.
Project approach
Fyfe’s proposed layout concentrated additional Tyfo SCH-41-2X layers near midspan, where moment demand was greatest, with reduced reinforcement away from that region. The design also incorporated composite anchors. The structural engineer requested comparison of different coverage widths and directed the team to proceed with a forty-eight-inch option, with final fabric extents tied to the project’s field-advice drawings.
Delivery and coordination
Delta coordinated engineering discussions and followed the progress of reviewed calculations and stamped drawings before installation. The exchange included the general contractor and port structural engineer, connecting field-advice revisions with the composite supplier’s detailed design. This coordination was particularly important because crew readiness and material release depended on a reinforcing package accepted for the current loading and geometry.
Project significance
CT5 illustrates the role of detailed design coordination in marine strengthening. Fiber quantity alone does not define the repair: load units, wheel-path location, strip coverage and development all influence the reinforcing arrangement. The project shows how those inputs were brought together into a location-specific deck-strengthening package for a cruise-terminal pier extension.
