UT Welch Hall Beam Retrofit

Carbon fiber beam strengthening in a congested university renovation area, requiring careful preparation and access coordination.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed a carbon fiber beam retrofit associated with the University of Texas Welch Hall renovation. The engineering objective was supplemental beam reinforcement in an area where surrounding building services substantially constrained access. The scope for The Beck Group combined careful preparation of existing concrete with an epoxy-bonded carbon fiber system designed for the identified beam condition.

Project challenge

A site visit identified the work area as heavily congested. That condition affected more than access to the beam: the crew needed enough working room to prepare the concrete and position the reinforcement accurately around existing obstructions. The project therefore required an installation sequence suited to a restricted area, with attention to both the receiving surface and the reinforcement layout.

Project approach

The planned installation began with preparation of the work area and rolling-scaffold access. Delta’s scope included grinding the concrete to the specified surface profile, laying out the fiber reinforcement, saturating the substrate and fabric with epoxy, and placing the composite to the drawings. The design basis identified a requirement for 13.8 kips of supplemental reinforcement. Any adhesion testing was to follow curing and be performed if required by the project.

Delivery and coordination

Delta developed the scope from the design and site observations attributed to Drew Park. The project planning recognized that the congested environment would slow preparation and installation, making access coordination a substantive part of the work. Product and system submittals connected the field sequence with the reinforcement design. The site observations helped define the care required around the existing obstructions.

Project significance

Welch Hall provides a useful example of how an apparently small reinforcement scope can be governed by its surroundings. The beam retrofit required the composite layout and concrete preparation to be executed within an already congested building area. The project highlights the connection between site investigation, access planning and delivery of a focused strengthening detail.
