Vickery Elementary Wall Strengthening
Vertical carbon fiber reinforcement on both faces of an existing school wall connected structural design with coordinated interior and exterior installation.
Delta Structural Technology completed carbon fiber wall strengthening at Vickery Elementary. The work addressed additional capacity in an existing concrete masonry wall using reinforcement on both faces. The design translated the required wall reinforcement into a pattern of vertical carbon fiber strips, linking the structural requirement with access, surface preparation, and installation on the interior and exterior sides of the school wall.
Project challenge
The strengthening requirement concerned the wall as a structural element, including reinforcement distributed along its length. Treating only one face would not match the proposed arrangement. The installation plan therefore had to account for two different access areas while maintaining the intended strip layout on each side. The masonry surface also needed preparation suitable for a bonded composite system.
Project approach
Delta’s scope was based on the wall design and calculations provided by KL Structures. It described vertical carbon fiber strips on both faces of the east wall, with spacing developed to meet the required reinforcement arrangement. The installation sequence paired hand-grinding preparation with layout and application of the composite. Shop drawings, engineering calculations, and material submittals connected that field sequence to the wall-strengthening design.
Delivery and coordination
The proposal separated exterior and interior work in its access plan. It included the equipment needed to reach the wall, ventilation provisions, and material witness panels, while the broader contractor coordination covered obstructions, staging, and suitable working conditions. Dry surfaces and appropriate temperatures were identified for installation and curing. These provisions tied the two-sided reinforcement layout to the conditions needed for application.
Project significance
Vickery Elementary illustrates a targeted masonry strengthening approach in which the distribution of reinforcement matters as much as the material itself. The project connected a structural requirement to a repeated strip pattern across both faces of the wall. Planning the interior and exterior activities together helped keep the engineering layout central to the installation scope.
