3811 Turtle Creek Double Tee Strengthening

Precast double-tee strengthening at 3811 Turtle Creek addressing defined supplemental bending and shear requirements.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed carbon fiber strengthening of a double tee at 3811 Turtle Creek in Dallas. The scope developed for Morley Moss addressed additional structural capacity in an existing precast member. Its design basis compared existing capacity with the required bending and shear demands, establishing the supplemental contribution assigned to the composite reinforcement.

Project challenge

The engineering task required consideration of both flexure and shear in the double tee. The design assumptions included the member’s geometry, strand pattern and span, so confirmation of the existing precast configuration was integral to the reinforcement approach. The required additional capacity was evaluated for the individual tee stems rather than treating the member as an undifferentiated slab.

Project approach

The proposed carbon fiber treatment included reinforcement on the underside of the joists and followed the provided drawings. Delta’s scope included staging, system scaffolding and preparation of the concrete receiving the composite. Material layout and placement were to follow the reinforcement submittals. The design comparison set out separate supplemental moment and shear demands, giving the composite detail an explicit structural purpose for the double-tee stems.

Delivery and coordination

The installation package included composite shop drawings and other system submittals. Scaffold access was part of the work plan, and the concrete surfaces needed preparation before reinforcement placement. Member geometry and access to the tee stems connected the engineering assumptions with the installation layout. The preparation and reinforcement sequence followed those member-specific requirements.

Project significance

The Turtle Creek project demonstrates a member-specific retrofit of precast double-tee construction. Its distinguishing feature is the explicit relationship between the existing member configuration and the supplemental bending and shear requirements. The case emphasizes the importance of defining the existing structural element before translating a capacity requirement into a composite installation detail.
