Davie Medical Center Cored Beam Retrofit
Cored-beam retrofit at Davie Medical Center addressing cut reinforcing steel with top-side carbon fiber and a U-wrap.
Delta Structural Technology completed a carbon fiber retrofit of a cored beam at Davie Medical Center in Florida. The third-floor repair addressed reinforcing steel cut during coring, as identified in the project’s request for information. The scope developed for Brasfield & Gorrie combined reinforcement on the top of the beam with a U-wrap arrangement around the affected member.

Project challenge
Coring through an existing beam had cut reinforcement, creating a condition that required a specific strengthening response. The repair needed to relate the location of the cut steel to an externally bonded reinforcement layout. Access to more than one beam face was also important because the proposed treatment included both the upper surface and a wrap around the beam.
Project approach
Delta’s scope began with staging and accurate marking of the fiber application area. Concrete preparation was to follow the manufacturer’s requirements before epoxy was applied to the structural member. The proposed composite system used Tyfo SCH-41 on the top side of the beam together with a U-wrap over the cored area. This arrangement established a defined repair geometry linked to the condition described in the RFI rather than a general coating application.
Delivery and coordination
A product submittal package was included in the work scope, connecting the selected system with the site installation. Staging space and necessary permits were assigned to the general contractor. The work plan also required suitable substrate and curing conditions. Coordination centered on making the affected third-floor beam surfaces available for preparation and placement of the different parts of the reinforcement detail.
Project significance
The Davie project demonstrates a focused application of composite strengthening after damage to embedded reinforcement. Its distinguishing feature is the combined top-side and U-wrap arrangement at a cored beam. The case shows why identifying the affected reinforcement and matching the repair geometry to the beam condition are central to developing an installation scope.
