Life Science Plaza Beam Strengthening
FRP beam strengthening coordinated around concealed electrical junction boxes.
Delta Structural Technology completed FRP beam-strengthening work at Life Science Plaza. At Grid 9, concealed electrical junction boxes changed the available installation surface and required coordination between Delta’s field crew and the strengthening engineer.

Project challenge
Removal of the brick stairway wall exposed electrical junction boxes embedded in the concrete beam. One newly identified box was approximately four inches across and served electrical equipment associated with the sprinkler room. The obstruction occupied an area relevant to the planned fiber-reinforced polymer wrap. Resolving the condition required a clear distinction between equipment that could be temporarily removed and components embedded in the structural concrete.
Project approach
Delta’s field representative reported the discovery to Garner Consulting Group and confirmed that the boxes were embedded. The engineer first considered whether the boxes could be removed, the FRP installed, and the electrical equipment reinstated. Once the embedded condition was confirmed, the engineer called for a revised FRP design to accommodate the obstruction. Delta authorized that redesign, connecting the field finding directly to an engineering response.
Delivery and coordination
The Grid 9 exchange brought the installer, project management and engineer into the same decision. Field information established what was physically present, while the engineer determined how that condition affected the reinforcement arrangement. Wall removal therefore became an essential point for confirming the strengthening detail before application. The revised design addressed the beam as exposed during construction.
Project significance
This project illustrates the importance of checking concealed conditions during structural renovation. A small embedded service can affect where external reinforcement can be placed. Delta’s contribution combined installation expertise with timely field reporting and engineering coordination, helping translate the strengthening design into work that could be carried out around existing building systems.
