UTMC Garage Priority Repair

Double-tee repair combining shoring, steel components and carbon-fiber reinforcement.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed a priority repair of a damaged double-tee member in the UTMC parking garage. The project brought together temporary shoring, steel repair components, concrete restoration and carbon-fiber strengthening alongside hospital parking coordination.

Project challenge

The May 2015 field report described a fractured stem that had dropped approximately one to one-and-a-half inches relative to its original elevation. It also identified a gap of roughly one-and-a-half inches between the topping slab and the precast flange. Those conditions made the repair a coordinated structural operation involving both the precast member and the slab above.

Project approach

Delta installed shoring and reshoring to grade and received hot-dip-galvanized steel channels. Crews opened small investigation windows to identify the topping-slab mesh depth, laid out demolition limits and sawcut the perimeter. Through-bolt holes were core drilled to avoid hammer-drill spalling at the double-tee underside. The repair plan then sequenced jacking, stem repair, carbon-fiber wrapping of adjacent stems and reinstatement of the topping slab.

Delivery and coordination

The field team used the alternate bottom through-bolt detail, with clips shop welded before galvanizing. Johnson & Galyon coordinated partial garage closure with the hospital to address traffic, parking and the shoring footprint. Barricades and blocked parking spaces defined the work area in the field report. Jacking was planned for late afternoon to reduce the number of garage occupants during that operation, with engineering site review coordinated through the project team.

Project significance

This project demonstrates the coordination needed when a precast repair affects both structural support and everyday building access. Temporary works, fabricated steel, concrete sequencing and adjacent-member reinforcement all formed part of the repair. Delta combined field investigation and practical construction planning within a garage serving a hospital campus.
