Kalahari Punching Shear Reinforcement
Coordinating shear-bolt layouts and FRP with existing slab reinforcement.
Delta Structural Technology completed the Kalahari Resorts and Convention punching-shear-bolt project. An August 2019 request for information documents the coordination challenge between new shear bolts and existing top reinforcement. The case shows why retrofit layouts need a clear process for resolving conflicts encountered within an existing slab.

Project challenge
The RFI stated that some bolt locations conflicted with top reinforcement. It reported a limit of two existing top bars cut per side of a column, and noted that some locations could exceed that limit. The issue was particularly relevant to diagonal bolt positions.

Project approach
Delta raised the conflict through a formal request for information. The proposed solutions included compensating FRP where existing reinforcement was cut, and an adjustment to lateral bolt tolerance paired with an additional bolt. These options gave the design team specific alternatives to evaluate before authorizing a field-layout change.

Delivery and coordination
The document was addressed to Hensel Phelps and linked the field conflict to the engineering basis for the repair. It distinguished the existing condition, proposed solution, and technical rationale. That structure gave the design team a concrete issue to review before the field layout changed.

Project significance
The project linked existing reinforcement, new shear-bolt geometry and compensating FRP within a single coordination process. Resolving the conflict required both a workable installation layout and engineering review of the affected slab reinforcement.
