New Hanover and Pender County Bridge Reinforcement

Anchored bridge carbon fiber reinforcement coordinated with barge-based scaffolding and contractor-supplied materials.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed carbon fiber bridge strengthening associated with the New Hanover and Pender County project. The scope developed for Coastal Gunnite Construction placed composite reinforcement at the underside of slab joists and included drilled carbon fiber anchors. Barge-based scaffolding was part of the installation planning for the designated bridge work.

Project challenge

The underside location made access over water an important part of the scope. Crews needed working platforms suitable for preparing the concrete, laying out reinforcement and drilling anchor locations. The project also separated access and material responsibilities, requiring the installation package to be coordinated with the contractor’s provision of the composite materials and water access.

Project approach

Delta’s scope included system scaffolding on barges, concrete surface preparation and installation of the specified Tyfo reinforcement. The design reference was sheet S2-140, with fiber placed at the bottom of the slab joists. Drilling and installation of carbon fiber anchors formed a separate task within the scope. These anchors and the surface-applied reinforcement were coordinated parts of the bridge-strengthening detail.

Delivery and coordination

The proposal identified contractor-supplied Tyfo 11UP fiber, anchors and epoxy. Provision of water access was a separate responsibility from Delta’s scaffold installation. Composite submittals and layout requirements connected those supplied materials to the field installation. The working arrangement therefore depended on clear interfaces among access, materials and reinforcement placement.

Project significance

The project illustrates the practical coordination involved in anchored composite reinforcement beneath a bridge. Its defining features are the underside joist treatment, drilled anchors and barge-based scaffold plan. The case emphasizes that access and material responsibilities are integral to an installation scope in a waterway environment.
